Baile nan Gàidheal | Highland Village brings the story of the Nova Scotia Gaels to life as they leave their home in Scotland and build new lives in Nova Scotia. Step back in time with our costumed animators as you travel through four distinct eras, each bringing the experiences of past generations of Gaels to life and celebrating our rich language and culture.

Our living history site is perched on a picturesque hill overlooking the Bras d’Or Lake. Your self-guided walking tour of will take you through 13 period buildings, inspiring curiosity and appreciation for Nova Scotia’s rich Gaelic traditions. Hear our language, stories and songs, experience aspects of daily life like food, work, and crafts, and immerse yourself in our culture that has been passed down from one generation to the next. The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site brings you back to French colonial life from 1713-1758. First the home of the Mi’kmaw people, the 18th century brought French, English, Basque, Scottish, and African people to its shores.

Discover authentic Mi’kmaw culture along our picturesque 2.4-kilometre trail on Goat Island in Eskasoni. The Island hugs the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Immerse yourself in Mi’kmaw life with a guided tour along the trail. One of our passionate and knowledgeable Mi’kmaw cultural interpreters will guide you to several villages along the route, each offering a unique experience to learn and partake in our way of life.

A self-guided tour option allows you to immerse yourself in our culture at your own pace. A walking map identifies all village locations and points of interest to explore at your leisure.

A guided tour will allow you to experience:

  • Take part in a smudging ceremony
  • Learn to make four cents cake over an open fire
  • Learn the art of basketry
  • Learn and join in our traditional dance
  • Speak to our trading post merchant
  • Play the ancient game of Waltes
  • Learn about hunting and fishing techniques
